One of two western Wisconsin siblings injured in a roof collapse of a shed has died, and his younger sister remains hospitalized in grave condition.

The Eau Claire Leader Telegram reports that Nelson Nolt, 10, died Monday after he was removed from life support. A wake and funeral for the child are scheduled for Friday.

His sister, Norma, 7, remains on life support and is in very serious condition, according to a press release from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department.

At about 4:30 Saturday afternoon, the two children were playing on a skid steer that was sitting in a shed next to a barn at the Nolt family’s property near Boyd, Wis. The roof, weakened with the weight of snow, collapsed on them, pinning the siblings under its heavy weight. Their father Lamar Nolt heard the cave-in and rushed to extricate them.

The Chippewa Herald noted that on the day of the incident, the temperature high was 43 degrees, one degree short of the record high temperature for the day. "So all of the snow came off the (metal) barn roof at one time,” said Ronald Patten, chief of the Boyd-Edson-Delmar Fire Department, instead of slowly melting and dripping off

Neither child was breathing when rescuers reached them, but both were revived. They were taken to a hospital in Eau Claire and later transferred to St. Mary's in Rochester.
