Outback upgraded the Bloomin' Onion for March Madness – and it's insane

We recommend not eating one alone.

Americans sure do love a Bloomin' Onion.

We're talking, of course, about the signature appetizer from the restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse. The glorious $7.99 app is a whole Vidalia onion, sliced into sections, battered and deep fried, and served with a delightful "spicy signature bloom sauce."

It's loved by many, including supermodel Chrissy Teigen. But it's also kind of a walking heart attack.

The whopper of a starter packs about a day's worth of calories (1,954), as well as 154.7 grams of fat, and 3,841 mg of sodium, according to nutrition facts on Outback's website.

Diets vary, but the Mayo Clinic says a person eating 2,000 calories per day should consume 44-78 grams of fat, and less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day.

So it's safe to say the dish isn't doing us any favors, health-wise. Still, Americans want more, and Outback is listening.

Back in June, the restaurant decided to make their app even more outrageous by topping it with cheesy fries, bacon bits, and ranch dressing. Then last month, they piled shrimp and lobster on it.

Now, they've upgraded the onion again in honor of March Madness – and it's out of control.

ESPN sports writer Darren Rovell broke the news of the "3-point Bloomin' Onion" on Twitter Monday.

It's pretty much the cheesy fries version from last summer, but with chunks of steak added for good measure.

And it's over 3,000 calories – which could make it the most caloric appetizer out there right now.

Delish says it'll be available starting March 15 through April 4 – and people are already ready for it.

We recommend not eating one alone.
