Outdoor activities result in deaths, injury over holiday

Two people were killed and another hospitalized after winter sports proved dangerous over the New Year's holiday.

A 33-year-old man from Grey Eagle, Minn. was killed after the snowmobile he was driving crashed into a tree just after 8 p.m. Monday near Melrose Township. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says alcohol was a contributing factor.

Another mishap involving a snowmobile killed a woman in Wisconsin on the same day. The 40-year-old from Illinois failed to negotiate a curve and rolled her snowmobile down an embankment in the northeastern part of the state. Authorities say alcohol may have been involved in that crash as well.

In La Crosse, Wis, a 60-year-old man fell through the ice while cross-country skiing on the Mississippi River just north of Airport Beach on New Year's Day. He was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

The Minnesota Department of Resources says ice is never 100 percent safe and offers tips on ice safety.
