Six northern Minnesota fire departments helped to battle a blaze that broke out early Sunday morning and caused major damage to a motel in Cook.

The Duluth News Tribune reported that it will cost more than $500,000 to repair the Vermillion Motel.

The fire at the 17-room motel in northern St. Louis County was detected by a guest who woke up around 3 a.m. to the smell of smoke and reported the fire. The guest alerted other tenants and the Northland's News Center reported that all 17 occupants were able to escape without injury.

The St Louis County sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the fire, but no cause has yet been identified. Agencies that helped fight the blaze included the Cook, Orr, Tower, Evergreen, Greenwood and Pike-Sandy-Britt fire departments..

WDIO reports that the local chapter of the American Red Cross is helping displaced people, who were all visiting from out of the area.

In June, fire damaged five units at Bluefin Bay overlooking Lake Superior in Tofte. Over the Fourth of July weekend, the Lake Breeze Motel and Resort in Duluth was damaged by fire and an explosion.
