Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital begins $140M facelift

With a growing and aging population, the Twin Cities are changing rapidly – and a long-standing St. Louis Park hospital will be spending big bucks to change with it.

Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital, which was built in 1959, announced Tuesday that it would begin a $140 million renovation and expansion project aimed at bringing ambitious changes to the facility, according to a release.

Among some of the planned upgrades are the renovation of 135,000 square feet, the addition of 60,000 square feet, two new inpatient floors, and a modernized surgery center with improved safety and efficiency.

But what about the patients? That may be the best part. The release indicates that when the renovation is done, nearly all rooms at Park Nicollet Methodist will be private.

Many are currently only semi-private.

“As the west metro continues to grow and the median age of the population increases, this project will ensure that we can meet the needs of our community for decades to come,” said Park Nicollet Senior Vice President Roxanna Gapstur.

Park Nicollet says Hennepin County's population is expected to jump by 20 percent over the next quarter century, while Minnesota's 65-plus population may "nearly double" by 2040, fueling a huge demand for medical services.

Sustainable and energy-saving technology will also be among the upgrades.

The huge project will be a boon for the local construction industry as well. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports that Twin Cities companies Mortenson Construction and RJM Construction are leading the renovation.

The project is set for a 2019 completion date.
