A small area of Minnesota picked up 14 inches of snow Thursday.

An "extremely narrow" band of snow – only 10-20 miles across – moved into west-central and northwest Minnesota Thursday, dumping more than a foot of snow in some communities, the National Weather Service says.

The heaviest band was expected to hit from Casselton up through far northwest Clay County and into south-central and eastern Norman County. That region could see 13-15 inches of snow by the time the storm moves out at about noon.

The heaviest band of snow is expected to diminish around that time, which is also when a winter storm warning for the region expires.

The National Weather Service said this storm was more like a summertime thunderstorm than a winter storm. KFGO meteorologist Tom Szymanski says storms like this – called mesoscale banding – are rare, noting they create narrow bands of heavy downfall, but leave nearby areas with little or no accumulation.

There's another chance for precipitation across the state through Friday, before "very cold" temperatures move in Saturday and stick around through next week, the weather service says.

Those arctic temperatures could mean the Vikings game Sunday is one of the coldest in NFL history – the game-time temperature is forecast at 3-below zero, with a windchill of around 20-below.
