Parts of I-94 westbound in St. Paul, I-35W in Minneapolis to close this weekend
Parts of I-94 westbound in St. Paul will close this weekend as part of an ongoing construction project, while I-35W will once again shut down south of Minneapolis.
Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, I-94 westbound between Western Avenue and Highway 280 will close until 5:00 a.m. Monday.
Ramp access to that portion of road will close at 9:00 p.m. Friday until 5:00 a.m. Monday.
MnDOT has laid out detours during the closure. I-35E going north, Highway 35 going west and Highway 280 going south will pose alternative routes during the closures.
To make matters worse, I-35W is closing completely between Hwy. 62 and I-94 over the weekend, while I-694 will be closed in Little Canada, between Victoria Street and I-35E.
The closures in Minneapolis and St. Paul will make things difficult for anyone planning on driving to the Minnesota United game against FC Cincinnati, with Allianz Field sitting right alongside the stretch of closed I-94.
Taking the Green Line light rail will be your best bet to avoid traffic problems.
The closures on I-94 are part of larger improvements on I-94 between Western Avenue and Highway 280, beginning in April and going through October.
Costing $7.7 million, the project will resurface the road to be smoother, improve safety and update the stretch to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to MnDOT.
