Police in St. Paul are investigating a fatal crash in which impairment may have been a factor early Tuesday morning.

Saint Paul PD says the crash was reported at 2:36 a.m. on the 70 block of Sycamore Street, with responding officers finding two men trapped inside a vehicle that crashed in a residential area not far from Jackson Street.

Both people were extricated from the vehicle by St. Paul Fire.

A 49-year-old passenger died at the scene and the 44-year-old driver was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment for non-critical injuries and a blood draw.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Sycamore Street E. when it left the roadway and struck a tree on the boulevard just east of Jackson Street on the southside of the road. The vehicle then careened north across Sycamore and struck a second tree. This is where officers found the vehicle," a police spokesperson said.

"Drugs or alcohol are believed to be a factor in this crash. A search warrant was drafted to obtain a blood sample from the driver involved in this crash."
