A cyclist has been struck and killed by a Blue Line light rail train in Minneapolis, a day after a woman died after being hit by a Green Line train in St. Paul.

Metro Transit confirmed to MPRthat the male cyclist hit by the train near the 46th Street Station Friday morning died in Hennepin County Medical Center.

His identity has not been released.

The Star Tribune reports he was headed "at a high rate of speed" south along Hiawatha on the bike path that follows the Blue Line, when he turned onto the tracks at 46th Street and was hit by the southbound train pulling into the platform.

Transit spokesman Howie Padilla added that the cyclist is believed to have ignored warning signals including flashing lights, ringing bells and a crossing arm. He was trapped under the train and had to be freed by Minneapolis fire crews.

It comes a day after a woman was killed when she was hit by a Green Line train at a crosswalk on University Avenue, west of Hamline Avenue, at around 11:30 a.m.

It's been reported that she was hurrying through the crosswalk at the time. The crossing's warning bells and flashing lights were operational at the time.
