A pedestrian was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

Police identified the pickup involved in the incident through surveillance video and were able to locate the driver within about 15 minutes from him fleeing the scene, according to  Sgt. Mike Ernster, of the St. Paul Police Department.

Officers responded to the crash scene at Vandalia Street and Charles Avenue in the Midway area around 4:45 p.m. On arrival, they found a male victim who was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

The suspected driver was arrested off Vandalia Street between Interstate 94 and University Avenue. The truck he was driving had damage consistent with the crash, police said.

The 46-year-old man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, said Ernster. He is now in custody at the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
