Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run in downtown St. Cloud

Witnesses helped police identify the driver.

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run in downtown St. Cloud on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The collision happened as the pedestrian was walking southbound on 5th Avenue at around 3 p.m., when he was hit by a vehicle traveling west on 1st Street North.

The driver fled the scene while the victim was taken to St. Cloud hospital, where he later died.

Police were able to track down the driver a short time later thanks to witness reports, finding the suspect at a home on the 1300 block of 12 Avenue North.

They arrested a 20-year-old man, who is in custody at Stearns County Jail.

"The St. Cloud Police Department would like to thank the witnesses who provided immediate, critical information in this investigation," said Lt. Lori Ellering.

The identity of the victim hasn't been released, pending family notification.
