A person whose name frequented election ballots in Minnesota for decades has died.

Richard "Dick" Franson, who died Wednesday at the age of 86, "will always be remembered for his political campaigns, military service and love of his country," his obituary says.

Franson's name appeared on the ballot in state and local elections 30 times, a letter published by the Minnesota Newspaper Association (MNA) said, including campaigns for secretary of state (most recently in the 2014 election), U.S. Senate and mayor of Minneapolis, among others.

He served as a Minneapolis 12th Ward alderman in the mid-1960s.

"Whether you liked him or not, everybody will agree: He fought for what he believed in," his nephew, Kevin Brandt, told MPR News,

Franson, born in Little Falls and grew up in Minneapolis, retired as a U.S. Army First Sergeant after serving in Korea and Vietnam, where he was exposed to Agent Orange, the MNA notes.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday at Bradshaw Funeral Home, with internment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
