The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants to build a memorial to honor turkeys that were killed when a semitrailer hauling birds hit 10 parked cars and tipped over in Sioux City, Iowa, on April 12.

PETA says 500 turkeys died in the crash, according to a release on the organization's website. Now the group asking the Iowa Department of Transportation for permission to erect a 10-foot tall tombstone (photo below) featuring a turkey and the words "try vegan" inscribed near the bottom.

“This tribute will remind commuters that the best way to prevent tragedies such as this one is to go vegan, because turkeys shouldn’t have to make terrifying trips to slaughterhouses at all,” Alex Moore, an Iowa resident who works for PETA, wrote in her letter to Iowa DOT.

Moore also wrote that the memorial would help prevent future accidents and make roads safer by reminding truck drivers of their responsibility "to the thousands of animals they haul every year as well as to the motorists whose lives are endangered when a tractor-trailer crashes.”

Iowa DOT Director of Traffic and Safety Steve Gent told the Sioux City Journal that he's drafting a response to Moore that would “probably be finished sometime this week.”

WQAD says there is no state standard for roadside memorials in Iowa, but state law prohibits roadside objects that obstruct safe travel and the right-of-way along Iowa roads.

PETA spokeswoman Sophia Charchuk said the organization has tried to place memorials in other states before, but with little luck, the Sioux City Journal says.
