Two St. Paul neighborhood groups are holding a vigil for Philando Castile – and others fatally shot by police – at the site of Castile's death.

The Stand for Justice: Monday at the Memorial event will be held at Philando's Peace Garden, which is where Castile was shot and killed by a police officer back on July 6.

It's on Larpenteur Avenue, just west of Snelling Avenue – just next to the northern edge of the State Fairgrounds – and will run from 5-8 p.m. Check out the map to the right for more details.

The plan, according to the Facebook event, is to honor the memory of Castile and others killed by Minnesota police recently – including Jamar Clark, Marcus Golden, Map Kong and others.

Last year, 12 people were fatally shot by officers in the state. In 2016, nine people have been shot and killed so far, according to the Washington Post's database.

"As State Fair goers pass the site of Philando’s murder, let’s peacefully remind them of the violence that occurred there on July 6," the event says.

They encourage you to bring signs and flowers (and potted ones will be cared for afterward at the garden).

"But the most important thing is to bring yourself. Share your grief and outrage," the post says.

The event is being hosted by Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace and St. Paul Eastside Neighbors for Peace.

The State Fair is 'monitoring the situation'

A representative for the Sate Fair said they're aware of the vigil, and are "monitoring the situation."

But, spokesperson Brienna Schuette added, the group has said it's a peaceful rally, and they don't plan to enter the fairgrounds. The Merriam Park group told the Pioneer Press and KSTP there are no plans to block traffic.

According to Schuette, the fair has a "very large and comprehensive Emergency Management Plan" to respond to things like demonstrations. That includes a public safety staff of mroe than 300 people, which works with law enforcement in the area on responses.

"We will keep fair visitors informed of any potential issues via our website and social media channels," Schuette said.

Another event planned Saturday

There are more rallies planned to draw attention to officer-involved shootings.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar is holding a MN State #AintFair rally – there will be a rally starting at that time at University and Snelling, followed by a barbecue at a local park.

The group says more details will be released later. It's slated to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
