One of the houses where F. Scott Fitzgerald lived for a time in St. Paul has gone on the market.

Coldwell Banker Burnet on Friday listed 593 Summit Ave., offering the 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom row house on St. Paul's most famous and exclusive road for $665,000.

While not as celebrated as much as 599 Summit Ave., which is known as the F. Scott Fitzgerald House and is a National Historic Landmark, "The Great Gatsby" author spent Christmas 1914 with his family on the 3rd floor of 593 after returning from his schooling at Princeton University.

According to Fitzgerald in St. Paul, he then returned for eight months during 1915 when he came down with a "mild case of tuberculosis."

The Pioneer Press reports that Fitzgerald wrote his short story "The Spire and the Gargoyle" at 593 Summit Ave. – one of eight row houses that make up "Summit Terrace" – before incorporating it into his first novel, "This Side of Paradise," which he completed at 599 Summit.

The property at 593 was built in 1889 and comes with 3,441 square feet of space. The listing describes it as having "incredible woodwork, central sky-lighting, spacious rooms, a breezy deck, updated kitchens and bathrooms."

"You'll love the retro/metro style with stunning architectural detail inside and out."

The Pioneer Press notes that the current owner of the property has lived there for 34 years and is moving to northern Minnesota. During his time there he "restored it to its original beauty," real estate agent Sarah Kinney told the newspaper.

"It really is an unusual row house, even for St. Paul, and we're lucky that it's still in overall excellent condition," she added.
