A school bus was hit by a pickup whose driver had fallen asleep in the wheel in western Minnesota Friday afternoon.

The collision was reported at 3:50 p.m. in Yellow Medicine County, where the pickup crashed into a Palmer Company school bus out of Cottonwood on County Road 8.

The bus, which was carrying 41 Lakeview School District students, was hit after the pickup drifted into the northbound lane while heading the opposite direction.

The school bus driver attempted to evade impact by driving into the edge of the road ditch, but it was struck on the driver's side.

Both vehicles suffered major damage, but fortunately neither driver nor the 41 students on board were injured.

When interviewed by police, the 41-year-old pickup driver from Echo, Minnesota, said he'd fallen asleep at the wheel. No other impairment was found, but he was cited for multiple traffic violations.

The incident remains under investigation by the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office.
