Picture-perfect weather Sunday; frost possible by end of week

Enjoy the picture-perfect weather Sunday, because highs in the 50s and 60s are expected by the end of the week.

A dry Canadian air mass settled over Minnesota this weekend, making way for plenty of sunshine, low humidity and temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s, Paul Huttner wrote on MPR News' Updraft blog.

But the "stunningly nice Sunday" will make way for soaking rain Wednesday, followed by temperatures in the 50s, Paul Douglas wrote on the Star Tribune's weather blog.

There will be a risk of frost, especially in northern Minnesota, by the end of next week, AccuWeather says, as temperatures trend nearly 20 degrees below average – putting lows in the 30s for much of the state.

"The frost will be mostly a concern for backyard gardens, where tomatoes, squash and other sensitive vegetables and flowers are flourishing," AccuWeather meteorologist Dale Mohler said.

There is also a slight chance of wet snow mixing with rain showers in the norther parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, AccuWeather notes.

Leaf peeping season

It's almost time for leaf peeping season, and this year expect vibrant colors.

“Things are going to be pretty good, primarily because we’ve gotten enough rain,” Jana Albers, a forest health specialists with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, told the Star Tribune.

Albers said the weather has been cooperating to bring good fall colors this year.

The state Department of Natural Resources has a fall color finder, which is updated weekly based on which areas are at peak peeping season.

La Salle Lake State Recreation Area has been the first to start turning, with about 10 to 25 percent of leaves changing color, according to the DNR's website. The state recreation area is about 233 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, and eight miles north of Itasca State Park.

Stillwater, Minnesota, is one of the best places in the nation to see fall colors – the city ranked No. 3 on a top-20 list of best places to look at the fall colors.
