Piece of metal flies through Minnesota woman's windshield
No matter how many times the Minnesota State Patrol reminds us of the dangers of unsecured loads, something inevitably flies off the back of a truck and almost kills someone.
It's happened again, this time in Maple Grove northbound Interstate 494.
According to a Friday morning Facebook post from the State Patrol, a piece of metal "flew off" a truck, bounced on the road, and then crashed through the windshield of a Jeep being driven by a 38-year-old woman:
(As an aside, the GoMN staff think that hunk of metal looks more like a side of raw turkey.)
Luckily, the patrol says, the victim managed to walk away with just a few minor cuts. No citations have been issued, however, because the driver of the truck was not found.
"We can’t say this enough: Make sure anything you’re transporting is properly secured," the State Patrol writes, as "improperly or unsecured loads can kill people."
Case in point, Thomas Willis Ely, a 57-year-old motorcyclist who was killed this past June in Scott County when a lawn chair and a roll of carpet fell off the back of a truck and hit him, the Pioneer Press reported.
Here are some tips on how to keep your cargo properly secured if you're using a truck or trailer. Failing to do so is against state law, and can result in misdemeanor charges.
