A 26-year-old Albert Lea pilot and his 19-year-old brother were lucky to walk away after their four-seat Piper Tri-Pacer plane crashed in a cornfield Tuesday in Beauford Township, roughly 100 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, the Mankato Free Press reports.

Pilot Lucas Elliott Schuster, and Jeremiah James Schuster, left the Wells Municipal Airport about 45 minutes before the crash, the newspaper reported. The plane's engine lost power and Lucas had tried unsuccessfully to land on County Road 4, the Free Press reported.

The plane ended up on its top. Schuster called the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Department after the 5 p.m. crash, but he reached a number that sent him to voicemail, and he left a message. Deputies didn't hear the message until Wednesday morning, the newspaper reports.

Later, officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and sheriff's department met with Lucas Schuster at the scene, KAAL reported.

The FAA is investigating the cause of the crash, KEYC reports.
