Pistachios recalled after salmonella outbreak affects at least 1 in MN

A nut company has voluntarily recalled some of its pistachio products after an outbreak of salmonella that saw a Minnesota man among those struck with the illness.

Minnesota's Department of Health (MDH) and Agriculture (MDA) announced Thursday they're working with federal health agencies to investigate the outbreak of salmonellosis associated with the Wonderful Pistachios brand.

The outbreak has reached 11 states, though only one case has been reported in Minnesota. The man was sickened, but not hospitalized.

The MDH did say however more people are likely to have been affected, but haven't reported it.

The California-based Wonderful Pistachios recalled a select number of in-shell and shelled pistachios on Wednesday amid concern over possible contamination.

As well as being sold under the "Wonderful" brand name, they're also sold under Paramount Farms and Trader Joe's branding, and have "sell-by" dates in October and November of this year.

A full list of recalled products and their product codes can be found here.

Symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms usually begin within 12 to 72 hours after exposure, but they can begin up to a week after exposure.

Between 700 and 900 cases of salmonella poisoning are reported each year in Minnesota.
