Pizza chain abruptly shuts down its 2 Twin Cities restaurants

A national pizza chain suddenly closed 10 of its Midwestern restaurants, including two in Minnesota.

Texas-based Pie Five Pizza Co. on Monday shuttered its two Twin Cities locations – in Eden Prairie and Woodbury – less than 18 months after they opened.

In a statement sent to GoMN, a company spokeswoman said: "We made the very difficult but operationally necessary decision to focus development on our growing markets. It was truly in the best interest of the brand, our franchisees, shareholders and other team members."

Staff at the Woodbury restaurant were given barely any notice of the closure, with store manager Mary Peterson telling the Woodbury Bulletin she found out when a work crew showed up on Monday and began dismantling equipment.

She was then told the store would be immediately shut during an 8 a.m. conference call, with 15-20 workers losing their jobs. According to the newspaper, she spent the rest of her day "crying and shuttling food destined for the dumpster to a nearby food shelter in Stillwater."

Pie Five only opened up its Eden Prairie location in October 2015, the Southwest News Media reported. It was followed a month later by the Woodbury location at the new CityPlace development, with a spokesman telling FastCasual that the response in Eden Prairie had been "amazing."

Pie Five Pizzas gives diners the option of choosing one of its signature pies, or choosing their own from a selection of 28 toppings, with the pizza then cooked in less than five minutes.

There are now no more Pie Five Pizzas in Minnesota.
