A northeast Minneapolis restaurant that launched a frozen pizza empire will be transformed into an upscale apartment building.

The Star Tribune reports that the Minneapolis Planning Commission approved construction of the residential project to replace the landmark Totino's Italian Kitchen.

Twin Cities-based developer Schafer Richardson expects to close on the site in a few weeks and begin construction this summer. The vacant restaurant will be demolished and replaced with a new 130-unit, six-story apartment building with 10,000 square feet of retail on the first floor.

The building will include two floors of underground parking, more than 100 bike parking places, with an on-site bike maintenance facility. There will also be a 900-square-foot dog park and a rooftop gathering space with a fire pit.

Jim and Rose Totino sold their frozen pizza company to Pillsbury for $22 million. Mama Rose’s patented crispy-crust party pizzas are still shipped across the country.
