A report of a possible plane crash in northern Minnesota on Tuesday morning resulted in a wide-ranging search that turned up nothing – because there was no plane crash.

Sgt. Wade Rasch of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office told GoMN that they received a report around 9:50 a.m. from a person traveling on Hwy. 53 near Cotton, Minnesota, who said they saw an airplane in distress - "maybe smoke coming from it," Rasch said.

Taking the report seriously, a massive search began, which included resources from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, a Life Link helicopter and even some members of the Minnesota DNR who were in the southern part of the county doing unrelated work.

All of the local and regional airports were contacted and none reported missing aircraft.

"There's nobody missing," Rasch said. "So I don't know if it was a UFO or what."

KBJR reported that the search was near Canyon, Minnesota, which is about 33 miles northwest of Duluth.
