Plane returns to MSP after 'smoky odor' is noticed by passengers

A Delta flight to Florida had to return to the Twin Cities after a "smoky" smell was reported in the main cabin.

WCCO reports that flight 2802 from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Tampa International, which was carrying 148 passengers, turned around after the odor was noticed.

The Business Journal reports its pilots declared an emergency, and they were met by emergency vehicles on a taxiway at MSP. The plane was then checked over by fire crews.

A spokesperson for the airline told WCCO the crew on the MD-88 plane returned out of "an abundance of caution."

Another plane has been drafted in to complete the journey to Florida, the Business Journal added.

">WCCO's Jennifer Mayerle, who tweeted that the passengers had boarded onto the new plane at around midday, with the plane pulling away from the gate around 12:30 p.m.

According to FlightAware, flight 2802 was due to depart at 9:05 a.m. and arrive at 1:03 p.m. eastern. It is now likely to arrive just over three hours later.
