Zoological Society CEO Sam Madia told the Duluth News Tribune the zoo will likely reopen sometime after Wednesday, although it's unknown if the zoo's polar bear and two seals will return from the Como Zoo in St. Paul. Madia acknowledged the Zoological Society's 2010 long-range plan doesn't include the popular Polar Shores exhibit. The zoo's senior staff is expected to re-evaluate their options and make a decision as soon as possible.

The animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth was negligent in allowing 13 or 14 animals to die during the flood Wednesday. PETA called on Duluth City Attorney Gunnar Johnson to bring cruelty charges against the zoo.
Berlin the polar bear recovering after surgery
Berlin, the Lake Superior Zoo's polar bear currently residing at Como Zoo, is recovering after surgery this weekend. The polar bear had been acting lethargic and vomiting before exploratory surgery at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center was performed. Berlin was moved to the Como Zoo after major flooding in the Duluth area in June.
