An incident Saturday at a home in Cloquet led to a standoff and a 20-year-old Twin Cities man fatally shooting himself, according to police.
The incident began at a home on Ridge Road in Cloquet around 10:20 a.m. as "a man armed with a gun" entered the house and "threatened the residents," according to Cloquet Police Department.
Officers were able to clear the house with the exception of the suspect, who remained inside as police attempted to negotiate with him for approximately 2 1/2 hours.
"When negotiations failed, officers used less than lethal efforts to bring an end to the event," police said. "Unfortunately, while attempting to bring the incident to a peaceful ending, the man produced a handgun and took his own life."
No officers fired their guns, nor were any of the responding officers injured.
The identity of the 20-year-old Twin Cities man has not been released.
Cloquet Police Department, Fond du Lac Police Department, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene.
