An officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead closed both directions of Interstate 694 between Interstate 35E and Interstate 35W in the north metro early Wednesday, which backed up traffic for the morning commute.

The adult male suspect had led police on a chase following an apparent homicide at a rest area in Maple Grove, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said at a news conference Wednesday.

At about 1 a.m. Wednesday, Maple Grove police responded to a report of a shooting at a rest area along Interstate 94 and Weaver Lake Road. An adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported the suspect had left in a red SUV with Oregon license plates and when police tried to stop the suspect, he led police on a chase that ended when he lost control of the SUV and hit the center median on eastbound I-694 east and Rice Street in Shoreview.

The sheriff's office said the lone occupant of the vehicle got out, brandishing a weapon. Police shot at him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Hennepin County sheriff’s deputy and Brooklyn Center police officer fired their weapons during the incident, the sheriff's office notes.

The identities of the suspect and victim will be released by the Hennepin and Ramsey county medical examiners. The relationship between the two is not known.

"Unfortunately two lives were lost today and many other lives were impacted," Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said during the news conference.

A six-mile stretch of I-694 west was closed until about 9 a.m. while officials investigated the shooting. This forced drivers to use alternate routes, backing up traffic for miles. (At left is 35W at County Road 96, where it meets up with I-694.)

I-694 east reopened around 9:30 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation notes.

The Maple Grove Police Department is investigating the apparent homicide at the rest area, while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
