The incident happened at 2:15 p.m. Thursday alongside Peavey Park, at the intersection of Park Ave. and Franklin Ave. When officers arrived on scene, they found an adult female and the young child both suffering from gunshot wounds, police said.

Minneapolis police worked "through the night," the news release says, and it led to the arrest of a 22-year-old adult male.

No word on if he's been charged or what police suspect his role may have been. No additional details about the man were made available. The investigation, police say, is ongoing.

Police say the woman in her 20s was not the intended target of the shooting, but was caught in crossfire, KSTP reports.

“Our community deserves better than the violence that has been seen on our streets lately especially that of an innocent mother and child yesterday," Police Chief Janeé Harteau said in a statement, noting she's proud of everyone involved for their "swift actions."

Separately, WCCO reported Thursday that numbers for the first half of 2015 show violent crimes in Minneapolis increased compared to last year. It’s the first time in three years there’s been a rise in homicides, which are up nearly 50 percent, the station says.
