Two people are dead following a high-speed police chase along a major metro highway Friday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m., the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a call about a vehicle driving erratically in Carver County.

KARE 11 says authorities were seen on MnDOT traffic cameras pursuing a car eastbound on Highway 212 into Eden Prairie.

Stop sticks laid down by authorities punctured at least two of the car's tires before the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed into a noise wall near Dell Road, the Star Tribune says.

A man and a woman got out of the car, a struggle ensued and shots were fired, the newspaper reports. The circumstances of the shooting following that point are unclear.

Lt. Eric Roeske said at an afternoon news conference that both the man and the woman were killed. Their relationship is under investigation. Authorities did not say if the suspects were armed. MPR News reports that Roeske would not answer reporters' questions about a possible hostage situation.

KSTP reports the vehicle had been involved in a rear-end crash at the intersection of Highway 212 and County Road 43, then fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in that crash had non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, according to the report.

The four officers involved – a state trooper, two Chaska police officers and a Carver County Sheriff's deputy – have been placed on standard administrative leave.

Highway 212 was closed between Highway 101 and Dell Road while authorities investigated. The highway has since reopened.
