Authorities have concluded from an investigation that distracted driving is likely the cause of a July 30 crash in western Wisconsin that killed three teenage boys, WCCO says.

The boys were trying to catch the eye of a girl in a car that had passed them on Interstate 94, the Star Tribune says. The 17-year-old driver was looking for a piece of paper in the center console, the newspaper reports. They were on their way to New Richmond, Wis., from Woodbury. A fourth teen in the car survived the crash.

Wisconsin State Patrol Commander Jeffery Frenette said the crash was a tragic chain of events, Fox 9 reports. He added that distracted driving or anything that robs driver attention can cause a crash that can forever change lives.
