Police this week have identified a man who was charged in January for driving drunk and smashing up pickleball courts in Waite Park and later ramming into another vehicle and then fleeing the scene.

Jose L. Briceno Jr., 26, of Waite Park, was charged in Stearns County District Court in connection to the Nov. 27 incident that left the pickleball courts at River's Edge Park severely damaged.

Police connected the drunk-driving crime to Briceno by matching vehicle debris on the court to a vehicle that had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in St. Cloud.

Briceno, who has been charged with two counts of third-degree DWI and two counts of failure to stop for an accident, was spotted by an officer while walking away from the scene of the hit-and-run.

A criminal complaint says he was having trouble walking in a straight line, with a preliminary breath test performed at the scene registering .201, more than two times the state's legal limit.

The pickleball courts are still in the process of being repaired by the City of Waite Park, with police announcing this week that the north courts will be opened as soon as the weather allows while the south courts remain under repair. The courts are also still without a windscreen that was damaged in the incident.
