Authorities in Freeborn County have not yet been able to identify the human remains found near Albert Lea earlier this week, and they're asking the public's help to see if anyone recognizes a ring that was found with the body.

The sheriff's office released photos of the ring Wednesday (shown above and at left). It's 10-carat gold, shaped like a class ring, and has a large red stone.

The skeletal remains were found Monday in a wooded area along Interstate 90 northeast of Albert Lea by a property owner. Authorities say they've likely been there for at least a couple years.

They believe the remains are those of a man.

In addition to the ring, authorities found some clothing and shoes that were severely deteriorated, according to Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag. He said the brand of the shoes is Mario De Gerard.

An initial autopsy on the remains has been completed, according to the sheriff's office, but it did not reveal the cause of the person's death, KTTC reports. A second and more detailed phase will be done soon.

The incident is being investigated as a suspicious death. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is part of the investigation, KSTP reports.

Authorities say there are currently no known missing person cases in Freeborn County that can be connected to this case. Anyone who has information about the case is asked to call the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office at 507-377-5200.
