Police investigating the death of a man and a woman found in a secluded area of Chippewa County have identified the victims.

Andy Wilcox, 42, and Charity Hoffelt, 41, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died from gunshot wounds after they were found on land to the west of the Sparta Cemetery near Montevideo on Sunday.

Hoffelt died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Wednesday.

Wilcox also died from a gunshot wound to the head later in a hospital. However the manner of his death has not been confirmed, with police yet to determine if this was a murder-suicide or a double suicide.

They had been called by Wilcox's family on Sunday, who told officers they believed him to be suicidal and in Chippewa County.

The investigation continues, with police saying there is no wider risk to the general public.
