The carjacking suspect killed by St. Paul police Sunday afternoon has been identified as 20-year-old Yee Vang, KSTP reports.

Vang, of St. Paul, was fatally shot when he exchanged gunfire with police after he carjacked a vehicle Sunday afternoon.

According to St. Paul police spokesman Howie Padilla, the series of events began around 4:30 p.m. when Vang crashed the car he was driving into a fence near Jackson Street and Cook Avenue East. He then stole a bike from a nearby bicyclist, but abandoned it a few moments later.

Vang then carjacked a silver SUV at gunpoint and drove away with the two occupants still inside.

A short time later, officers began pursuing the SUV as it was driving on West Minnehaha Avenue and tried to stop it. When the vehicle pulled over near Arundel Street, Vang jumped out of the rear driver's side door and began shooting at police. The officers returned fire and wounded Vang, who died en route to Regions Hospital, according to the Star Tribune.

During the shootout, a 14-year-old boy walking with a friend was caught in the crossfire. He was injured, possibly by a stray bullet or shrapnel that grazed his stomach.

He and the friend ran to a house about a block away, where a neighbor called 911. According to police, the teen suffered a non-life threatening injury and was being treated at Children's Hospital.

Padilla said police have interviewed a dozen witnesses so far, and the investigation is continuing, according to KSTP.

The four officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. Padilla said they are officers Laura Finnegan, Dan Gleason, Xiong Yang and Shawn Filiowich, the Star Tribune reports.

The incident occurred just a few days after St. Paul police were involved in another shootout, involving a fugitive suspected of shooting and killing Mendota Heights police officer Scott Patrick.

The suspect in that case, Brian Fitch Sr., opened fire on Patrick during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon. St. Paul police arrested Fitch after an eight-hour manhunt that culminated in a shootout with him.

Fitch is recovering from gunshot wounds in a St. Paul hospital. Fitch He's been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and several other crimes. Officer Patrick's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.
