Police in southeastern Minnesota are investigating the death of a one-month-old baby.

The Rice County Sheriff's Office says it was called to a home on the 14000 block of Shields Lake Trail in Erin Township around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, with paramedics arriving to find an unresponsive child.

Despite life-saving measures being carried out, they were unable to resuscitate the baby, with the sheriff's office describing it as a "horrific event."

"Our deepest sympathy go out to the family of this infant," said Sheriff Troy Dunn. "Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. These are calls are difficult for everyone involved and I thank our first responders for their attempts to save this child."

The child has not been identified, and their cause of death will be determined via an autopsy by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.
