According to the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Hardel H. Sherrell died Sunday while in custody. Authorities say Sherrell collapsed just before 5 p.m. and was unresponsive while in the presence of a corrections officer and a medical technician.

CPR and the use of an AED reviver were used immediately in an attempt to revive Sherrell, but were unsuccessful and he died at the jail.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine his exact cause of death, but as of now police say he died from an unknown medical condition.

His death is also being investigated by the Bemidji Police Department and Beltrami County Coroner's Office, with assistance from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
