A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot in the chest while playing a game of cops and robbers with his older brother Sunday morning, Eagan police said in a news release Monday.
Police initially didn't release much information on what they called a "suspicious death," but said Monday that the boy's brother, who is 15, called police around 11 a.m. Sunday saying his younger brother, Suhayb Hassan, was running with a knife and fell, accidentally stabbing himself.
But once police got to the Silver Bell Circle home, the brother told officers he lied to the dispatchers, and said he accidentally shot his brother after the two found their father's unloaded handgun in the home.
At some point the brothers loaded the gun, and then it was thought to be unloaded before they began playing the game. The older brother pressed the trigger and unintentionally fired the weapon towards his brother, hitting him in the chest, police said.
The brothers were home with their 11-year-old sister, who wasn't injured and didn't witness the incident, the release notes.
Police describe it as "a horrible accident."
The department says no one is in custody and it doesn't anticipate any arrests, but the case is being investigated by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and the Dakota County Attorney's Office.
