Police kill bear entering populated area in the west metro

The bear was near the volleyball courts at Lord Fletcher's.

A black bear that wandered into a populated area around Lake Minnetonka was shot and killed by authorities on Saturday afternoon.

Orono police say their patrols were flagged down around 12:35 p.m. by a family that had seen a black bear at the intersection of Sunset Drive and Shadywood Road, which is not far from Lord Fletcher's Restaurant in Spring Park.

Deputies from Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Orono police, and the DNR responded to the area and found the adult black bear by the volleyball courts at Lord Fletcher's.

Because there were hundreds of people at the restaurant, as well as boaters, anglers, pets and residents in the area, authorities made the decision to put the bear down.

The report says tranquilizers were not available so they decided to kill the bear.

On Friday, a black bear was spotted in a yard in Chaska, the first time a bear was been reported within city limits there in 43 years, according to police.
