St. Paul police announced Friday they have made an arrest in connection to a hit-and-run that critically injured two University of St. Thomas students earlier this week.

The Pioneer Press reports the 40-year-old St. Paul woman has also been cited five times since 2001 for failing to carry proof of insurance and once for failing to stop at a stop sign, according to state records.

Investigators are determining whether the hit-and-run was intentional or accidental, according to St. Paul police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos, reports the paper.

As BringMeTheNews reported earlier, Rebekka Peterson, of Farmington, and Nicholas Bergeland, of Wayzata, both 22, were taken to a hospital with critical injuries after being hit by a vehicle around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the 1900 block of Grand Avenue.

According to university officials, Bergeland and Peterson were getting out of a cab with three other people when they were struck by another car, according to KSTP.

Police had been searching for the driver after recovering the vehicle believed to be involved. Investigators found the gray 2013 Mazda involved in the crash about a mile from the scene, in the 1700 block of Carroll Avenue, last Sunday afternoon, saying it was "obvious" the car was involved in the crash that left its side mirror behind, according to Fox 9.

KSTP notes that Peterson remained in critical condition Friday. Information on Bergeland's condition was not immediately available.
