Imam assaulted while walking to Islamic center in Bloomington

The suspects are described as being in their late teens or early 20s.

An Imam was walking to Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington on Thursday night when he was assaulted, according to police. No arrests have been made.

Bloomington police responded to 82nd Street and Park Avenue around 10 p.m. and spoke with the 50-year-old victim, who is from Bloomington, police said.

The victim is an Imam at the center, according to media reports. 

He said he was walking to the Islamic center when two people, described as being in their late teens or early 20s, approached and began assaulting him.  

The victim suffered a non-life threatening upper-body injury and was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. 

Police searched the area but did not find the suspects. The department is actively investigating the incident and asking anyone with information to contact call 952-563-4900. 

On Friday, people gathered outside Dar Al Farooq to show their support following the attack.
