A murder-suicide over the weekend in Forest Lake involved a brother and sister, according to an update from Forest Lake Police Department.

A release from the department explains that the incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the 18000 block of Henna Ave. North, with police responding to the location after an abandoned 911 call was made.

As officers arrived at the scene, a man inside a pole building died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Inside a house on the property was the man's sister, who had been fatally shot in a basement bedroom, police say.

Investigators determined that the man, identified as 39-year-old Phillip R. Kresge, entered the basement bedroom and shot his sister, 37-year-old Michelle D. Kresge, multiple times from intermediate range with a handgun.

Their mother and father were inside the home at the time and were safely escorted out of the home after the shooting.

Police continue to investigate the crime and have yet to determine who the gun belongs to.
