A man who fatally shot himself during a standoff with police in Cloquet has been identified as 20-year-old Avery Brenden Cogswell, of St. Paul, according to an update Monday from the Cloquet Police Department.

Cogswell is accused of entering a home on on Ridge Road in Cloquet around 10:20 a.m. Saturday, with police saying he was "armed with a gun" and threatening residents.

Officers were able to clear the house with the exception of the Cogswell, who remained inside as police attempted to negotiate with him for approximately 2 1/2 hours.

"When negotiations failed, officers used less than lethal efforts to bring an end to the event," police said. "Unfortunately, while attempting to bring the incident to a peaceful ending, the man produced a handgun and took his own life."

No officers fired their guns, nor were any of the responding officers injured.

"The CPD offers our condolences to the family and friends of Avery during this difficult time," the department said.
