Police in Mankato say an MSU student died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the campus library Monday.

Officers responding to a call about a suicidal man evacuated Memorial Library. They say the man fired the fatal shot at 4:30 p.m.

Police say they later used the university's emergency alert system to tell students there was no longer a threat to the public. Most of the library was reopened at 6:15, the Mankato Free Press reports.

The Free Press reports students who were in the library said police told them to evacuate within 30 seconds.

The deceased student was identified as Timothy Lee Anderson, 27, a junior majoring in philosophy, WCCO reports.

In 2006 the MSU campus was shaken by two suicides within a month.

Experts say suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college-aged students.
