Police: Officer fatally shoots armed individual in Olivia

The altercation took place around 2:20 a.m. Sunday.

Police say an individual is dead after getting into an armed confrontation with a police officer in rural Minnesota early Sunday morning. 

According to police, an officer from the Olivia Police Department fatally shot a person after they were "confronted by an armed individual" and a confrontation took place in an alley around 2:20 a.m. near the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue. 

The person who was shot was taken to Olivia Hospital and pronounced dead. 

The identities of the officer and the person who was shot have not been released. The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave. 

Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension officials have taken over the investigation. No further information has been released.
