7 P.M. UPDATE
The "major crash" that shutdown a stretch of West Broadway Ave. in Crystal Thursday afternoon resulted in a trio of suspects being arrested and a Crystal police officer being hospitalized.
According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), a State Patrol trooper was in pursuit of a driver after attempting to stop the motorist for a speeding violation. The pursuit began shortly after 1 pm. on I-694 at Hwy. 169.
Squads from the State Patrol and Crystal Police Department boxed the fleeing driver in near 57th and West Broadway in Crystal, but as they were trying to take suspects into custody, the driver again attempted to flee and ran over a police officer, also damaging several police vehicles.
The officer who was run over was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries that are not life-threatening, the DPS said.
Another officer fired at the vehicle after the other officer was struck. That officer has been placed on standard administrative leave.
One of the three suspects was treated for superficial injuries at the scene, though the DPS says it is "unclear how the individual was injured."
The three suspects from the vehicle have been taken into custody and booked into the Hennepin County Jail.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident.
Police say a "major crash" Thursday afternoon has closed a stretch of West Broadway Ave. in Crystal.
"Due to a major crash W. Broadway Ave is closed between Bass Lake Rd and 57th Ave." the Crystal Police Department announced just before 2 p.m.
"At this time it is unknown how long the road will be closed. Please avoid the area."
