The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released details about an officer-involved shooting in which one person was killed in Hastings.

According to the release, Hastings police officers were investigating a stabbing at a group home at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday. The victim and suspect in the stabbing lived at the group home, and upon arrival officers found the victim with multiple lacerations. The suspect had already fled the home.

Shortly before 6 p.m., officers were dispatched to an area near 15th Street West and Hwy. 61 where the suspect had been spotted. Two officers found the suspect walking on the 1500 block of Walnut Street, and during the encounter one of the officers shot and killed the suspect.

What prompted the officer to open fire is unclear and the BCA is investigating. The officers were wearing body cameras and squad vehicles had dash cameras that the BCA will review.

"More information will be made available, including the names of the officers, once initial interviews are complete," the BCA says.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending autopsy and notification of family members.
