Police say another sexual assault involved man posing as cop

Authorities now say there were two sexual assaults in the Twin Cities over the weekend in which women were attacked by a man impersonating a police officer.

Police in Fridley said Monday that a woman walking alone on Saturday afternoon was approached by a man in an SUV who identified himself as an officer, FOX 9 reports. Police tell the station the victim was then kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and released in a case they say is strikingly similar to one reported Sunday by a University of Minnesota student.

U of M police issued a crime alert after that incident, which occurred at about 2:15 a.m. A professed officer - whose physical description and SUV match those in the Fridley case - reportedly warned the victim about the dangers of a woman walking alone and offered her a ride.

U of M police initially reported the man claimed to be a police officer. But the Star Tribune says Minneapolis police later clarified that while the man wore a badge on his jacket and implied he was a security officer, he may not have said so directly.

Police tell FOX all officers, whether uniformed or plain clothes, carry badges and ID credentials which they must show upon request.
