An apparent armed robbery at a Twin Cities shoe store turned briefly into a hostage situation, after the suspect ran back into the store when police arrived.

The Coon Rapids Police Department said in a press release that nobody was hurt in the incident, which happened at a Payless Shoes on the 8500 block of Springbrook Drive NW around 8:45 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the suspect entered the store and confronted employees while showing a "possible gun."

A hold-up alarm alerted police, and officers from multiple departments were sent to the scene.

When Fridley police arrived, they saw a suspect leaving the store with what appeared to be a gun, and he then ran back into the store.

Officers set up a perimeter and a Coon Rapids police negotiator made phone contact. After "several minutes," the suspect agreed to come out, and did so without incident.

Neither of the employees were injured, though one was found to be bound with duct tape.

The suspect is a 38-year-old from Minneapolis, and was arrested. Police aren't looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
