Police shoot armed Newport woman with 'less-than-lethal munitions'

She pointed guns in the direction of deputies at the scene.

A standoff between police and an armed woman in Newport on Thursday resulted in the woman being shot with "less-than-lethal" ammunition.

The incident unfolded just after noon in the 2100 block of 3rd Avenue, with police receiving a report of a woman holding a handgun and standing outside a home.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said deputies tried to communicate with the woman, but "she continued to point the firearm in the direction of the deputies on scene."

Officers from Cottage Grove, Woodbury, and St. Paul Park attended the scene along with members of the Washington County SWAT team.

Police negotiated with the woman for almost an hour "but were unable to convince her to drop the weapon."

"After repeated failed attempts to negotiate less than lethal munitions were used and the women was then taken into custody," the sheriff's office said.

The woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
