A man who stabbed a police dog to death was fatally shot by police on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneer Press reports that officers from the St. Paul police, the Ramsey County sheriff's office and the U.S. Marshals Office had come to a home in the Summit-University area of St. Paul to look for a man. A St. Paul police K-9 found the man in the basement, and the man stabbed the dog. St. Paul police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos said the officers then shot the suspect.

Police have not identified the man or provided information about the dog.

Formerly a St. Paul police K9 officer, Paulos said that police dogs are like family members and that it hits the department hard when they are killed.
